Delvina, 1600’s Mosque Restoration Kicks Off

The restoration process of Gjin Aleksi’s mosque in Delvina, constructed around 1600, kicked off recently thanks to a joint project between the Ministry of Culture and Muslim Community of Albania. This mosque, situated in Rusan village of Delvina, was constructed around 1600 on the ruins of a byzantine monastery. This ancient building is situated in the center of the village and is composed by a complex with three cupolas. The Ministry of Culture has given the status of ‘Culture Monument of the First Category” to this mosque. 

This mosque is composed by the portico, the prayers hall and the minaret. The northern side portico, covered by a wooden roof, joins and stone arcade. This is one of the rare buildings of this kind that intertwines local, post-byzantine and ottoman cultures. Gjin Aleksi’s mosque has been largely known for the perfect acoustics.
