‘Different but Equal’

In 1992 the United Nations proclaimed December as the Day of Persons with Disabilities, to promote understanding of issues of disability and mobilization in support for the dignity, rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.

In the framework of this day the Development Center “Pigeons” in Tirana, organized on Saturday an awareness raising activity under the motto “Different but Equal”. This festive activity aimed to raise the level of awareness of the society toward this category. This activity was attended by the center’s director, Sonila Agaj, Deputy General Director of State Social Service, Lida Leskaj, the center’s children, parent and the educational staff. In her opening speech director Sonila Agaj evidenced this day’s importance, addressing an appeal to the entire society to be more attentive and more committed toward disabled individuals.

“December 3 is a very important day, which that should serve as a message to remove every kind of obstacles, and realize completely and in full parity the disabled individuals’ participation in the society. We should all be more attentive toward disabled individuals and should contribute in their integration”, said director Agaj.

Meanwhile even the State Social Service, deputy general director, Lida Leskaj, underlined the continuous efforts that should be done for disabled individuals life improvement, while praising the highly qualitative work and the contribution given by the Development Center ‘Pigeons’ in this direction.

On this December 3 this center’s children had the chance to spend a very special day, which was graced by music and animators that conveyed beautiful emotions with their performances. Part of this activity was even an artistic corner where multiple works realized by these center’ children was exposed.

Development Center ‘Pigeons’ plays since a long time a very important role in the disabled children life quality improvement. This center has now become a home for many children, enabling them to have a better future.

The center’s doctor, Vasil Seko, emphasized the importance of similar activities due to the fact that they serve to children socialization, giving a valuable contribution in their development.

”It is of crucial importance to organize similar activities which generate without any shadow of doubt progress. Our center takes care of disabled children since a long time and I may say that their progress has been evident. Anyway, this process continuity is very important, because those achievements should be consolidated. The creation of cooperation bridges with similar institutions in other countries would be a very positive step”, said Seko.

The special activity was organized thanks to the important and generous contribution of “Neranxi” company and “Ami Event”, which enabled a special day filled with emotions and beautiful surprises for this center’ children.
