Archives Unearth Ali Pasha Tepelena Execution’s Documents

Ali Pasha Tepelena, also known as the “Epirus Lion” was executed on January 24, 1824, at the end of a long-lasting attempt to create his sovereign territory, independent from the Sublime Porte. The General Directorate of State Archives (GDSA) published on his death anniversary the official document that ordered his execution.

“Through this document the Sultan ordered his execution and his head to be sent to Istanbul. A picture, released by the GDSA shows a copy of this letter, also known as ‘Jafta’, whose original is preserved in the Ottoman archives.
