A series of interesting data, until now unknown by the majority of domestic and foreign visitors of Scanderbeg's tomb in Lezha, have been recently published by an expert of the culture monuments in Lezha. The expert Ded Margjoni said that a crypt and a sarcophagus are situated two meters below this very important tomb, where a copy of Scanderbeg's helmet and sword has been placed. According to him this important discovery was made nearly 40 years ago, during the works for the restoration of Saint Nicola's cathedral, Scanderbeg's burial site by the Culture Monuments Atelier specialists. The archaeological excavations during that period evidenced the existence of a sarcophagus made of limestone belonging to the medieval period of time. This ancient object had been covered by a thick layer of isolating material and was situated nearly 1.8 meters below the church's floor.

Lezha City Hall has submitted a written request to the Archaeological Institution technical assistance in reopening this site aiming to increase the visitors' number.
