Gjirokaster Castle, Eastern Wall Crumbles
October 27, 2016

A section of the Gjirokastra castle eastern wall, situated in proximity of the Clock’s Tower, crumbled as a result of degradation. This corrosive process that kicked off many years ago in the mural structure may be followed by the crumbling of another section of the wall. The ancient walls basic instability caused by the erosion, humidity and the absent restoration, are the main factors that led to this alarming situation.

The eastern wall’s demolition may have been caused by an earthquake that was registered a few days ago in Gjirokastra or even due to the rainfalls.

Regional Directorate of Monuments informed the public opinion that a comprehensive intervention will be undertaken aiming to prevent any risk for the pedestrians.

Gjirokastra’s castle is the most important object of cultural heritage in Southern Albania. This castle is mentioned for the first time as city and castle in 1336.
