Durres sea is very polluted and no one should have contact with this water. This is the appeal of the National Environment Agency (NEA) which made public on Monday the results of laboratory analysis of water samples taken from Durres coastline after the alarm given by the citizens, on the huge amount of oil spilled on the sea surface on Saturday.

"Petroleum products resulted to be present in the samples, the figures resulted very high compared to the prescriptive norms and standards, considering the fact that bathing waters should not contain petroleum products at all. Lack of chemical oxygen and biochemical oxygen is very high in value which is interpreted in a high pollution," confirmed the Agency.

General Director of NEA, Julian Beqiri, said: "We arrived in the conclusion that the hydrocarbon presence is very high, which is very risky for the health of the citizens and also for the environment. The data are really alarming. Therefore, it is categorically prohibited any contact with water or bathing in the sea, until the pollution situation in Durres, in the length of 2.5 km, is completely normalised.
