Insufficient Funds to Maintain Roads, Albania Seeks Funds From WB

Albania has followed an aggressive policy in the past 10 years, investing billions of dollars in building new roads. But the budget cannot maintain them. Data show that Albania spent in 2012 almost 2914 EUR for every kilometer, which is the lowest level in the region. Governments have spet 7000 to 10000 EUR for every kilometer in other countries with the same economy. This negligence has brought amortization and a recent report of the World Bank shows that the government must spend 400.000 USD to cover the current problems. Since the government cannot handle this expensive bill, the budget will pay 2.5 times less, or 156 million USD, 80 of which coming from the World Bank and the rest from internal funds.
Due to the lack of funds, the government has decided to focus the maintenance on more important roads that have a higher traffic and connect bigger economic centers.
