Divorces, Record Figures in Albania

Divorce is turning into a widely spread phenomenon in the Albanian society. Record figures of 24.7 divorces per 100 marriages were registered during 2016, indicating a drastic increase in comparison to only 9 divorces per 100 marriages in 1990, according to the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT).

Paradoxically, the lower divorce rate in Albania during the last 27 years was registered in 1997, with only 5.95 divorces per 100 families. The Albanian families preserved their compactness in order to cope with the difficult situation that followed the fraudulent financial schemes collapse and nearly lead to a civil conflict.

According to INSTAT the divorce prevalence registered a rapid growth during the early years 2000, but the couples� divorce rates accelerated during a period of time from 2014 to 2016, going respectively up to 17.8, 21 and 24.7 per 100 families.

Currently the divorce rate in Albania is higher compared to the region but lower in comparison to the EU countries
