The last excavations conducted in Durres have uncovered a luxurious building with public functions, belonging to the Byzantine period.

The discovery happened through the project Late Ancient Durres, a project in its second year.

The director of the Institute of Archeology, Brikena Shkodra Rrugia, expressed that this year they uncovered the following parts of the magnificent ancient building, where a pilaster in the shape of a cross came to light, with a height of 3.5 meters, close to which they found a surface covered in marbled tiles, an area they believe was used as a pool.

Graves were found on the surface of the marbled tiles, dating back to the VII century in our era, while its believed that there used to be a mosaic since the number of pieces found lead to believe the existence of a mural mosaic. The discovery has sparked the interest of the citizens of Durres, who visited the monument in the month in the archeological poll was being performed. The discovered object has been covered with dirt, in order to preserve it, the project is expected to continue next year.
