The archaeologists made another important discovery in Durres evidencing some structural elements constructed with costly materials and thought to belong to the late Antiquity period. According to the excavations director, Brikena Shkodra these structures may belong to an imperial palace of the Byzantine period.

These discoveries may belong to a large public complex constructed in late antiquity. This is a clear indicator of the fact that Durresi was an important city for the Byzantine Empire, said Shkodra.

Another idea is that these findings may also belong to a term (spa bath) of the same historical period, but Shkodra said that other elements are expected to finally clarify the function of the building.

New elements that are expected to be discovered will unveil this buildings real function. The most important element is the fact that this was a public not a religious building, said Shkodra.

These findings are another strong proof of this coastal city importance during the antiquity period.
