Saint Mary’s Church in Labove e Kryqit, part of Gjirokastra district, one of the most precious monuments of the medieval architecture in Albania, is finally being restored. This process includes foundations strengthening, roof’s renovation and the repair of one of the church’s cupola. The Monuments Institution project has a financial cost of nearly EUR 200.000.

Labova’s Church is defined as one of the rarest historic, religious and cultural monuments in Albania. The exact period of this church construction remains subject of debates between researchers. Some of them presume that this church was constructed through imperial expenses during the period of Great Justinian. The year 1554 is engraved even on the ancient church’s door, but researchers believe that this year marks it’s reconstruction on the ancient foundations.

Saint Mary’s church is also known as one of the 40 churches initially constructed in the entire world.
