Dritero Agolli, Renowned Albanian Poet and Writer, Dies at 85

Dritero Agolli, a well-known Albanian poet, writer, politician and former president of the Albanian League of Writers and Artists died on Friday, few months after his 85th birthday. The news was made public by his family.

From four days he was hospitalized in Tirana due to problems in the lungs. 

Last October National Library in collaboration with the National Film Archive and the National Theater launched a week-long activities celebrating the 85th anniversary of Dritero Agolli.

Also an exhibition entitled “Agolli’s retrospective and speech” that opened its doors on October to the public at the National Library features Dritëro Agolli’s work from the outset of his career in creativity which started with poetry in 1948 to expand into other literary genres spanning 65 years.

From his first poetry to volumes of poems, from sketches to novels, from fables to satire, from reportage to journalism, the work of D. Agolli plays out simultaneously the inspiration and commitment of the author to the challenges facing the Albanian society, spanning two epochs as much successful.

Dritero Agolli was one of the central figures of the Albanian poetry and one of the most important representatives of the 1960’ generation. The poetic creativity of Agolli in its core is lyric-epical, different from the traditional one, which was mainly founded in the epical glory.
