A large number of houses in the stone city of Gjirokastra are currently partially or completely ruined by the time’s weight. This was the conclusion of an inspection conducted in the city’s museum area by domestic and foreign specialists through a series of projects promoted by the Albanian executive during last three years.

Nearly 26 houses were deemed as completely or partially ruined by the Regional Directory of National Culture (RDNC) at the end of a two-year survey. These traditional houses are situated mostly on the city’s historic districts of Pazari i Vjetër”, “Mecite”, “Varrosh”, “Palorto”, “Dunavat” and “Manalat”.

According to the RDNC director, Albert Kasi the Albanian executive has prepared an ambitious project for the rehabilitation of 22 old houses. The city’s ancient bazaar is being currently restored with a fund of nearly USD 2 million.
