The Albania Committee of Helsinki (ACH) addressed an appeal to the Albanian authorities urging them to shut down Zaharia prison in Kruja due to the human rights severe violations. 

“175 prisoners which suffer from different mental illness are subject to human rights violation in this prison. This violation goes on since many years,” declares ACH.

This committee urges the authorities to take urgent measures by reallocating the prisoners in a specialized institution. 

“These individuals should be kept in a specialized institution where the proper medical care may be provided,” underlines ACH.

Even Burrel, Tepelena and Saranda prisons are considered completely out of standards by ACH.
