Competition for Independence Monument
Jury Starts Work to Choose 5 Best Models
“The Mayor has the great opportunity to choose this monument which will enrich Tirana with the missing cultural values, artistic values,” said Sali Berisha
TIRANA – The competition for the 100th Anniversary of Independence Monument, which was launched on December 22, 2011, was closed on March 15. The jury constituted by 9 well-known national and international personalities in the field of art, culture and architecture started working in order to choose the 5 best models on March 18 and will conclude it on March 21.
The 80 models prepared by 61 artists have been exhibited at the National Art Gallery and people can see them from March 22 to March 25.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha accompanied by the Mayor of Tirana, Lulzim Basha, Minister of Culture Aldo Bumci and Neritan Ceka saw from close the models exhibited at the National Art Gallery on Sunday.
Berisha said that this monument will bring Tirana closer to its Siamese sisters in Europe.
“The Mayor has the great opportunity to choose this monument which will enrich Tirana with the missing cultural values, artistic values. We have had 11 wasted years in Tirana, at European level I mean, in which we couldn’t find any European artistic value. Battles were made, during those 11 years, to defend a heritage, from which I hope and wish that the Municipality of Tirana releases this city, starting from the Palace of Culture which is an undeserved eyesore for the citizens,” said Berisha.
Furthermore, the Premier declared it is difficult choosing the winner among 80 competitive projects. “This is a competition with the largest participation of artists, over 60 sculptors and artists, who have brought their projects for the 100th independence anniversary monument. However, the jury is very competent, constituted by artists with foreign and native reputation and Tirana will have a monument for the 100th independence anniversary,” declared the Prime Minister.
