“The numerous votes of SMI and Ilir Meta and the increase of this political party in the last 10 years shows that if this trend will continue, in the next elections, be they snap elections or not, Ilir Meta will be the winner of the elections and he will be the next Prime Minister,” Ilir Kulla said, as quoted by daily Telegraf on Tuesday
Commenting on the political situation in Albania and the accusations against the Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI) chairman Ilir Meta, analyst Ilir Kulla said that these accusations express not only the fear of the Democratic Party (DP) and its leader Lulzim Basha, but also, that of the Socialist Party (SP) and Prime Minister Edi Rama about the increase of the SMI and of the popularity of Ilir Meta. The expert for security issues, Ilir Kulla, said in a TV interview on Monday that he sees a lot of fear among the two great political forces because of the success of the SMI and Ilir Meta, which according to him, will lead to him becoming Prime Minister in the next parliamentary elections, even if they will be snap elections. Ilir Kulla reads this same concern among the International Community which has understood that because of the current formula, the SP-SMI coalition may remain in power for the next twenty years.
“The numerous votes of SMI and Ilir Meta and the increase of this political party in the last 10 years shows that if this trend will continue, in the next elections, be they snap elections or not, Ilir Meta will be the winner of the elections and he will be the next Prime Minister. It does not matter if he will be in a coalition with the left or with the right, but Ilir Meta will win the elections and will become Prime Minister. This things puts the opposition in alarm, because with this kind of format, the SP-SMI coalition, DP will be in opposition for the next twenty years. So it’s not just Lulzim Basha and Sali Berisha, but also all those who are in the Youth Forum of the DP will grow old and still be in opposition. This causes concerns even among the International Community, which understands that with this kind of formula, there will be no change in power. There are also some who think that with the strengthening of the SMI and Ilir Meta, the relations within the left-wing coalition will change, and even within the SP itself. The growth of the SMI was unexpected even for the SP and its possible that in the next elections, new formulas will be used which are not political. Then we may have formulas which are similar to that of a juridical coup d'état to remove the political power from a political factor. We saw this scheme once in 2008, when the Constitution was changed and Ilir Meta was the only one who entered in the Parliament together with a group of people,” Ilir Kulla said.
