According to World Drug Report 2017 compiled by the International Narcotics Control Board and backed by the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, narcotics consumption and production have increased significantly worldwide, as VOA reports. As for the cannabis in the EU, the report says it is often cultivated in these countries, with Albania remaining the main source of the cannabis that enters the EU. Among other things, the report makes mention of the Balkan route which dominates the corridor of drug traffics in Eastern Europe. According to the data, Balkan has had several mafia groups replacing each other, but the main route remains the one between Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. The report says that however, international cooperation with potential candidate countries, such as Albania, Bosnia, Serbia and Macedonia, continues strongly by further assisting and developing their internal interception systems, based on international frameworks.
