Dozens of Himara inhabitants clashed on Tuesday with the Rapid Intervention forces aiming to prevent their houses demolition by the National Inspectorate for Protection of Territory (NIPT). The protesters waved the Greek flag while shouting in Albania and Greek language claiming for the violation of their rights as Greek minority. They have labeled the entire process as a genocide claiming that no indemnification is foreseen in accordance to the law. A few days ago they even refused to sit in the negotiations table with the Minister of Infrastructure and Energetic Damian Gjiknuri who arrived in Himara as representative of the government.
Some 80 houses are expected to be demolished in Himara paving the way to the city’s promenade requalification. This project has generated a reaction even by the Greek authorities who pretend that this is a clear violation of the Greek minority rights.
