The Code of Ethics, that is expected to be adopted within this parliamentary session, has generated different reactions among the majority’s and opposition’s MPs. The Democratic Party (DP) MPs were among the first ones to express their dissatisfaction related to an article of this code which forbids the lawmaker from receiving gifts or preferential treatments due to his or her position.
The Democrat MP Myslym Murrizi labeled as arbitrary the article which forbids gifts receiving related to the MPs official position.
“What should I do if a sheik is willing to make a donation? How can you detach the acquaintances related to the job position from those related to the personal life? All our acquaintances are somehow related to a public activity thus let’s not become hypocrite,” said Murrizi.
Meantime the Vice-Speaker Vasilika Hysi, at the same time a Socialist MP, declared that MPs operate with double standards. According to her the MPs use parliament’s fund when making gifts to others while keeping at home the gifts made to them. She emphasized the need for a parliamentary register where every gift received by an MP would be noted enabling its administration by the parliament’s structures.
