President of the Republic, Ilir Meta will not decree Gudar Beqiraj as the new chairman of Albanian Academy of Sciences. The irregularities registered during the electoral process and the absence of alternative candidates is the motives behind this decision.

The electoral process for the Academy of Sciences new chair went through polemics and debates while the critics were related to a closed process, rotation of places between the vice-chairman and the chair along with the absence of alternative candidacies.

Even Premier Edi Rama involved in the debate that preceded this electoral process defining it a farce. He also warned that “if the Academy would not be reformed than not a single dime would be given by the state’s budget and the academics would be asked to give back the premise.

Anyhow, in spite of this previous warning the budget foreseen for the Academy of Sciences in 2018 is nearly the same as the one for the present year. While a fund of ALL 112 Million was granted to this institution for 2017 the fund granted by the state’s budget for 2018 is ALL 110.5 Million.
