Tirana mayor Erion Veliaj defined the Albania's capital a model of social services for the citizens during a speech on Saturday in the Metropolitan Authorities forum that took place in Warsaw, Poland. The mayor stated that Tirana is changing rapidly while adding that the Albanian capital now has 35% of the population and generates over 45% of Albania's GDP.
He stressed that one of the biggest challenges for the city is the daily increase of the population and the need to provide social services to citizens.
"Tirana has been currently experiencing a positive trend. Rural suburban roads or peripheral areas, which had been left aside, are benefiting through a large scheme drafted by the municipality. I think the issues of transport, social services, and social housing issues that have been given a wider scope were obviously the best way to respond to this demographic shift that can't be coped otherwise," said Veliaj.
