Albanian Movie 'Daybreak' Runs for Oscar

The Albanian Movie ‘Daybreak’, written and directed by Gentian Koçi, was selected by the National Center of Cinematography (NCC) as Albania’s official candidacy in the ‘Best Foreign Movie’ category in the Oscar awards.

‘Daybreak’ is an Albanian-Greek co-production whose premiere was registered last month in Sarajevo Film Festival. The main actress, Ornela Kapetani, was awarded ‘The Sarajevo’s Heart’ as the Best Protagonist Actress.

Director Koçi chose the actors Ornela Kapetani, Suzana Prifti, Kasem Hoxha, Adele Gjoka and Pëllumb Dervishi as part of the cast for this movie that lasts 85 minutes and conveys a strong social drama.

The movie narrates the story of Leta, a young motherhas not been able to pay the rent for several months. When she and her one-year-old son are thrown out of their apartment, they move in with Sophie, an old woman confined to bed, whose daughter has just employed Leta as a caretaker. In order to keep her job and a roof over their head, Leta has to keep Sophie alive at any cost.

‘Daybreak’ is being screened in the Albanian cinemas since September 14.
