Some 75% of the fresh water fishes in Albania are endangered by the small Hydro-Power Plants (HPP) construction along the rivers flow. A recent survey conducted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCNNR) indicates that they are among the most endangered group of fresh water fishes in Europe.

The increasing number of HPP planned to be constructed in Albania carries a great risk for the biodiversity, the IUCNNR reports. The survey also shows that the Western Balkans fresh waters fauna, especially Albania’s, has poor evaluations. The international experts say that comprehensive surveys are needed in relation to the fauna’s situation ahead of a new HPP construction.

Over 152 small HPP are currently planned to be constructed along the Albanian rivers. Furthermore, according to this survey, four of them will be constructed in protected areas.
