Albania's Poor Education, Negative Influence on the Economy

Poor education in Albania has a negative influence on the country’s economy. This fact was evidenced in a report on the Western Balkans economic situation recently made public by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“Albania and Macedonia rank on top of the list of the region’s particularly poor countries in relation to the access in education system. This fact has serious implications for productivity, as well as economic growth, while visibly lowering the country’s workforce level,” IMF reports.

On the other hand this survey confirms a thesis that has been previously discussed regarding the “brain emigration” and its impact on the economy.

“A large majority of educated individuals in Albania leave the country due to its poor economic situation and the fact that they see no future there. This conclusion is detracted by the fact that emigrants’ education levels were generally higher than the average of their country of origin. On the other side ‘brain migration has a highly negative impact on country’s economy,” says IMF.
