Health Care Costs in Albania, Lower than EU Average

Albanian government allocated EUR 83 per capita, according to data calculated from the factual health care costs in 2015 published by the Ministry of Finance.

Meantime, according to EUROSTAT, the health care costs in the European Union was EUR 2076 per capita, meaning that Albania’s costs is 25 times lower than EU average.

Consequently Albania has lower spending on public health services in relation to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Health funds were part of the cutbacks, after the budget was revised twice in 2015. As a result the allocations were only ALL 32.1 billion or 2.24 percent of GDP by the end of 2015.

According to EUROSTAT, average spending on health in the EU in 2015 was 7.2% of GDP, while in Albania it was 2.2% of GDP. EU member states spent about EUR 1.058 billion on healthcare costs during 2015.
